How Tom Brady Almost Led The Celtics To A Championship

Okay that might be a stretch but Tom Brady’s mere presence almost convinced Kevin Durant that Boston was the team and home for him during his meeting with the Celtics in the Hamptons. As everyone knows by now, Durant ended up signing with the Golden State Warriors, but according to KD himself, he was very close to rocking Celtics green this coming season:

“I was ready to just say, ‘OK, let’s go,'” said Durant about the meeting earlier this month. “Just seeing someone so successful at his craft. He’s a great ambassador for the game of football and the city of Boston. It’s great to be in the presence of such greatness. But at the same time, I knew I couldn’t let that distract me.”

There were debates about whether Boston was actually in contention to land Durant, and now we can absolutely say we were (not that it really matters). But the point is that Brady’s historic numbers, legacy, and aura have an incredible effect on athletes across all sports. He is viewed as the symbol of absolute success. I don’t know what Brady did or said in this meeting, but even the Celtics players who attended couldn’t get enough of the four-time Super Bowl Champion.

Celtics’ guard, R.J. Hunter wasn’t part of Boston’s meeting with KD, but said the players who did attend were in awe of Brady:

“All I heard was their experience with Tom Brady, so I didn’t really get a lot about the [Durant] meeting,” Hunter said. “[The Celtics players were] like, ‘Yeah, the meeting was cool, but Tom, bro — it was crazy.'”

Think about that. The Celtics players came out raving about Brady when they are supposed to be focused on attracting a former NBA league MVP to Boston. “Oh Durant? He was alright. But Brady man… he floated off the ground while the skies opened up and rings fell from the heavens.” That’s at least how I pictured these meetings. It is stories like this that make me think TB12 should be more of a public figure in Boston, but I honestly think that would take away from his legendary aura. Oh to be a fly on the wall in this meeting.
